Presidents Message – Jan 2004

Greater Detroit Chapter of IIE #47

Greetings to all members:

April 2004

Last week I muddled through a bunch of old IIE Chapter 47 newsletters and noticed that there is a lack of features, articles and news-items submitted by chapter members for publication in our chapter newsletter. I take this opportunity to invite members to submit newsletter items for publication in the next two newsletters scheduled for release in July and October 2004. This is your newsletter. Lets start acknowledging accomplishments and share our experiences as Industrial Engineers. Please e-mail such items to Ron Brzuch, Newsletter Editor & VP at newsletter@iiedetroit.org

Jayant Trewn

2004 Board President

On the same note, I would like to invite our membership to get involved in the planning, organizing and execution of this year’s Fall Symposium. Last year, we held our first Fall Symposium at Beaumont Hospital. We featured speakers and presentations in the Manufacturing and Healthcare sectors with a focus on Six Sigma awareness. The success of last year’s event attended by 186 participants has encouraged the chapter Board to repeat this one-day event as a recurring annual symposium. This year we have started the planning process and are leaning towards a focus on Lean Techniques as applied in Six Sigma Performance Improvement methodology. If you would like to get involved in this years event, please e-mail me at president@iiedetroit.org.

Please mention if you would like to volunteer your time in planning and organizing the event or alternatively, send me your suggestions for making this event a memorable and valuable experience for our membership.

February 2004

First, I would like to thank you for electing me as President of the Chapter for the year 2004.  It my pleasure to take your confidence in my abilities and deliver to you a year of exciting programs, knowledge building seminars, networking opportunities and career enhancing information.  Lets look forward to another stellar year for our chapter.

This year, I would like to focus on the following:

  • Providing the membership an opportunity to experience cutting edge Industrial Engineering tools, techniques and concepts through a mix of programs like plant tours, symposiums, invited speaker series and workshops.
  • Involvement from leading businesses from various industries by having them co-sponsor these programs.
  • Encouraging Industrial Engineers to provide assistance in community affairs projects that benefit non-profit organizations
  • Reaching out to Metro-Detroit area schools by informing students about the benefits of entering into the field of Industrial Engineering.

With the able assistance of the Board of Directors of the Greater Detroit Chapter of IIE, I am confident we will provide members a fulfilling year.

Thanks you for your membership and continuing support to our chapter.  I encourage you to participate in the operations of the chapter by getting involved with the board of directors.  If this interests you, please do send an e-mail to president@iiedetroit.org

Achievements and events at the IIE Greater Detroit Chapter in 2003

  • Greater Detroit Chapter was awarded a Gold Award by National for “CAR” for Y2002 and we are confident we will also be awarded for Y2003.
  • Greater Detroit Chapter was also awarded Platinum award for Y2003 in Newsletter competition.
  • ESD will be recognizing Greater Detroit Chapter as “Partner of Year” for Y2003 in their annual banquet.
  • IE Magazine in their September Y2003 issue had an article regarding community service provided by Mr. Victor Lloyd, VP Community Service and his associates.
  • Visitation to our Website has increased multifold since it was reengineered recently.
  • On Oct24, 2003 “Six Sigma Symposium” was held in William Beaumont Hospitals Royal Oak, co-sponsored by IIE Detroit Chapter and Beaumont University to a packed conference room with 180 participants. This was our first walk into an uncharted territory. Based on the evaluations and hand-shakes it was a “TREMENDOUS” success.
