George will be presented the scholarship during National Engineering Week at the Engineering Society of Detroit’s (ESD) Gold Award Banquet on February 22, 2007 at the Dearborn Inn.

The scholarship, which is awarded each year by the Detroit IIE Senior Chapter, is based on grade point average, IIE student chapter participation and nomination by the Faculty advisor for the student’s chapter. George is an Industrial Engineering senior at Wayne State University (WSU). The successful scholarship candidate must show that he is dedicated to the Industrial Engineering profession and IIE. George has done just that over his career as an IE student. As President, he not only manages chapter activities, but has leadership qualities and a vision for new things the chapter can accomplish, such as increasing student-faculty interaction, and finding new ways for IE students to connect to each other on a primarily commuter campus. He represents the IIE student chapter at our College-wide Engineering Student Faculty Board. George has also been an active participant in the IIE Detroit Professional Chapter, representing his student chapter at board meetings, and volunteering at Detroit Professional Chapter events. He is always first to volunteer when IE and IIE need to be present at official functions, and he represents the chapter and the program well.

When asked about his involvement in the IIE student chapter at Wayne State, George replied “My strategy has been to develop professionalism and promote visibility. To develop professionalism I have maintained our student chapter’s tradition of volunteering at Gleaner’s Food Bank. I have also represented our chapter at board meeting of the Greater Detroit Chapter and attended community service events sponsored by them. Namely, I planted raspberry bushes at a housing project in urban Detroit. For me, professionalism means being excellent by making a contribution to the world.” George was nominated by his faculty advisor, Dr. R. Darrin Ellis, Assistant Professor at Wayne State University. In his nomination of George, Dr. Elliss states, “As student chapter faculty advisor, I have interacted with him as both a student chapter member and now as an officer. He is an excellent student and an outstanding citizen of the department, and leader in the student chapter. The department and program are better for his having been a part of us.”

2006 - Matthew Czech

Matthew Czech was awarded the $500 Irv Otis Scholarship from the Detroit Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). Matt will be presented the scholarship during National Engineering Week at the Engineering Society of Detroit’s (ESD) Gold Award Banquet on February 22, 2007 at the Dearborn Inn.

The scholarship, which is awarded each year by the Detroit IIE Senior Chapter, is based on grade point average, IIE student chapter participation and nomination by the Faculty advisor for the student’s chapter. Matt is an Industrial Engineering senior at the University of Michigan Dearborn. The successful scholarship candidate must show that he is dedicated to the Industrial Engineering profession and IIE. Matt has done just that over his career as an IE student. Matt also had a key part in organizing regular chapter meetings, heading a member recruitment drive for the student chapter, enabling the chapter to achieve the ‘SILVER’ award for Chapter Activity Competition with IIE.

Matt was nominated by his faculty advisor, Dr. S.K. Kachhal, Professor and Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Systems Department Head at the University of Michigan - Dearborn. In his nomination of Matt, Dr. Kachhal states, “Matthew is truly a very good student. He has done very well in his studies while serving as the leader for the student chapter of IIE. Matthew transferred into the Industrial & Systems Engineering program from Mechanical Engineering. He has already spent one term at NASA last summer and is going back for the winter 2007 term. He has always been available for recruitment activities for our department at various venues. He stays in close contact with the Detroit chapter and attempts to have a presence of our student chapter members at the events sponsored by the senior chapter. He is a deserving candidate for this award named for the person who gave so much of himself to the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the profession.”
